The summer's over already... how did that happen?! But there's still time for one more Roundup before we kick off the fall. Let's get started.

Anyone else ready for Fall?

Announcements

Fall Workshop: Domain of One's Own & WordPress Multisite 101 (October 01-02)

The fall DoOO/WPMS workshop is getting closer! This virtual event will take place on Tuesday, October 1st and Wednesday, October 2nd, starting at 12 pm ET each day and ending at 5 pm ET. We'll provide both applied training and concrete examples of both administering and teaching with Domain of One’s Own and WordPress Multisite, along with one-on-one time with Reclaim Hosting, as well as other present institutions.

The workshop is broken up into two distinct days. Day 1 will be dedicated to getting you comfortable administering and troubleshooting Domain of One’s Own, and Day 2 will focus on WordPress Multisite. You can sign up for either or both days, whatever piques your interest! Check out the events calendar for registration and ticket info, and a more in-depth breakdown of each day's agenda. We can't wait to see you there.

Let's talk Domain of One's Own and WordPress Multisite

September Community Chat: Chatting about Web archiving with the folks from Webrecorder!

On Wednesday September 18th at 12pm ET, we are delighted to be joined by the Webrecorder team to chat about web archiving! We'll also be talking about Browsertrix, their newest open-source tool to make archiving easy. RSVP on the events calendar here!

Summer Camp Retrospective

There was no August Community Chat, but we had an amazing time at the DS106 Summer Camp! If you weren't able to join us, the chat is still open on our Discord for the time being, and you can listen to all the recordings here (or pull the RSS feed into your podcast app of choice here). There are even transcripts, if you'd like to read along. This blog post also collects resources, blog posts, and a jumping-off point for anyone who wants to try hosting DS106Radio for themself.

To everyone who participated, whether you hosted a session, joined in the chat, or just listened along – from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We had an amazing experience, and we hope you did too.

Enjoying the bonfire until the end of Summer

Recent Blog Posts

Jim said it best at summer camp this past month: Blog or Die, people! And fittingly, the blog posts we have for you today are all fresh from the Bava:

  • Did you know that Reclaim turned 11 in July? Over that time, we've grown and grown, and so have our number of services. In "Greetings from Reclaim Hosting", Jim talks about his recent work with Meredith and Bryan Mathers to think through all our offerings – in ART form!
  • Jim kicked off morning ceremonies for almost every single day of DS106 Radio Summer Camp. His post, "The ds106radio Summer of Love Camp", reflects on the experience and what it was like to participate.
  • This month Jim hosted a stream session on retro computing using RetroPie! (More on that in the Reclaim TV guide section.) In "RetroPie Fun on Reclaim TV", he talks about the process and goals for the stream, along with how it went.

Staff Picks

We're kicking off the staff picks this month with something of a meta-pick! Plenty of folks blogged about/around Summer Camp and you should definitely check them out!

Next, Taylor shared Diablo 1 for web browsers! This project uses WebAssembly to let you play the classic dungeon-crawling experience right in your web browser. Nostalgia meets modern tech! You can try it out yourself here:

Taylor shared another completely web-based tool that lets you remove the background from images using an AI model that runs completely in your browser, in JavaScrip t!

And finally, an even more impressive version of this type of completely local, browser-based, AI image editing was also shared by Tom Woodward, this time from Meta:

Happy Fall y'all! Wishing you all a smooth start to the Fall 2024 semester. We'll see you next month!
